A troubleshooter… an organizer …a driver…and a marketer. No, it’s not the answer to a Jeopardy question, it is the skill set for NCI’s robotics interns.

It is summertime and that means that New College Institute (NCI) is buzzing with summer interns who are gaining valuable experience in a variety of disciplines. Four of the students are working in a unique program where, as robotics interns, they will have the opportunity to return to NCI in a part-time capacity when they return to college in the fall.

NCI’s Robotics Team Wins Challenge Cup


The Mid-Atlantic Broadband (MBC) Challenge Cup has a new home for the next year at New College Institute. The MBC Challenge Cup is a competition that rewards superior performance for FIRST FRC robotics teams in Southern Virginia. New College Institute’s team, STAGS, finished the highest of the 11 MBC-sponsored FRC robotics teams. In addition to $10,000, the STAGS gain possession of the MBC Challenge Cup trophy for one year. According to the team’s coach, Brian Pace, highlights from the competition season include being part of the winning alliance at the 2019 Richmond, Virginia district event; qualifying for the FIRST World Championship in Detroit, Michigan; and being selected by the number one seeded team in the Tesla Division at the World Championship.

NCI Board Appoints Former State Technology Leader as Interim Executive Director

Senator Bill Stanley (R-20), the Chairman of the New College Institute Board of Directors, announced today that the Board has unanimously approved the appointment of Karen R. Jackson, former Secretary of Technology for the Commonwealth of Virginia under Governor Terry McAuliffe, as the interim Executive Director of the New College Institute, replacing outgoing Executive Director Dr. Leanna Blevins, who resigned from the position last month.

Class of 2019 Marks More than 425 Degrees Earned at NCI

After countless hours in the classroom, completing projects, earning internship hours, all while maintaining family and job expectations — students at New College Institute (NCI) earned their degrees and gained credentials needed to take the next step in their careers. NCI celebrated the accomplishments of recent graduates at a reception with more than 100 in attendance. Graduates earned their bachelor’s or master’s degrees and all of their classes took place locally, at NCI.

Experts Combine the Best of Academics and Applied Learning at NCI for Local Manufacturers

Local manufacturing experts received five days of specialized training at New College Institute (NCI). NCI and Optimation Technology, Inc. teamed up to develop and provide Eastman employees instruction about best-in-class web handling techniques involved in performance film manufacturing. “The class really helps us diagnosis issues and identify defects,” said Paul Miller, a manager at Eastman.

College & Career Day Inspires Students

During College and Career Day at New College Institute (NCI), fifth grade students from Patrick Henry Elementary School (PHES) met with ten local professionals to learn about their educational backgrounds and careers. These professionals represented a wide range of experience including the fields of engineering, education, law enforcement, military, and healthcare. Students rotated in small groups, where they were encouraged to ask questions about the professionals’ pathways to their chosen careers.
