Library Media PreK-12

Virginia’s Standards of Quality require that every school in Virginia with a student enrollment of 300 or greater have a full-time certified school librarian.  Have you had difficulty recently filling open school librarian positions?  Do you anticipate having openings within the next few years and no ready pool of qualified candidates?

Longwood University is partnering with the New College Institute in Martinsville to offer its School Librarianship graduate program on-site in Martinsville. Courses are taught by full-time Longwood faculty in a hybrid format, meeting one to five Saturdays across the semester with the remainder of work for the course completed online. Longwood’s program is approved by the Virginia Department of Education and Nationally Recognized by the American Association of School Librarians.  The first course, SLIB520-Library Resources for Children, was offered during the fall semester; however, it is not too late for participants to join in.

The video is a few years old, and our program name has changed from “School Library Media” to “School Librarianship”, but what she shares is still relevant today.  School librarians impact the learning of every child in a school!

Longwood offers a Master of Education in School Librarianship (36 credits) or a Professional Endorsement option (27 credits).
