New College Institute Programs

New College Institute (NCI), with generous support from the New College Foundation, and in partnership with the Vinod Chachra IMPACT Lab at Radford University, is providing eight full scholarships for an upcoming cohort of the Lab’s 3-credit, online, and self-paced course in Foundations of Cybersecurity to eligible organizations, businesses, and individuals within the following counties and incorporated areas: Henry, Patrick, Franklin, Pittsylvania, and Martinsville.

The IMPACT Lab’s 3-credit hour Foundations of Cybersecurity is a great course for IT professionals who need a strong foundation on how to protect an organization’s infrastructure or for CTE teachers who will be teaching basic to intermediate cybersecurity courses. This course is also designed for professionals whose responsibilities might include keeping data and networks secure and who are seeking a fundamental understanding of the threats, attacks, and vulnerabilities that exist and how to mitigate those risks. Optimally, an IT background would be helpful, but it is not necessary if the learner has a basic knowledge and understanding of terms and concepts in IT.  An overview of the course content is provided below for your reference.

The eight scholarship seats will be provided on a first come, first-served basis to qualifying businesses, individuals, and/or organizations.

Radford University is delivering Innovative Mobile Personalized Accelerated Competency Training (IMPACT): a competency-based education (CBE) workforce development program.
IMPACT is a first-of-its-kind program among four-year public institutions in Virginia. Presently, IMPACT offers a cybersecurity certificate program delivered online in an asynchronous, self-paced manner. The IMPACT program:

  • Covers five out of seven domains of the NIST Cybersecurity Workforce Framework
  • Compliant with DoD 8140 directive
  • Directly aligned with national standards:
    • National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST)
    • National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE)
  • Designated as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education (CAE-CDE) by both the National Security Agency (NSA) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

IMPACT Prepares students for professional certification exams including:

  • CISSP
  • SANS GCIH*
  • SANS GPEN*
  • CompTIA Security+
