New College Institute Celebrates Asian American & Pacific Islander and Jewish American Heritage Month

Martinsville, Va- NCI will present Cultural Showcases on May 25 & 26 celebrating Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage and Jewish American Heritage respectively.  May 25, NCI staff member Chris Niblett will speak in honor of AAPI.  May 26 NCI will host an exhibit honoring Jewish American Heritage Month.  Both events will run from 4-6 PM at the Baldwin Building Lecture Hall, and will feature educational presentations, music and dance. Martinsville, VA –  This week, Governor Youngkin announced Google’s pledge to invest $300 million in Virginia. This statewide investment will have a direct impact on the Martinsville, Henry and Patrick County area as some of this money will be funneled directly into developing new technology-related training opportunities through Patrick & Henry Community College and the New College Institute.

NCI to Offer Virtual Health Science Career Training Program in Medical Billing and Coding

Martinsville, VA – New College Institute (NCI) today announced the launch of a new health sciences credentialing program in medical billing and coding.   The seven month, virtual program that begins May 9th prepares students with the knowledge and skills to become a Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS) through the National Healthcare Association (NHA) and prepares them to become employed as medical biller and coders working in hospitals, insurance companies, physician billing offices, home health agencies, and other healthcare facilities.

New College Institute to Host AFA CyberCamp

Martinsville, VA – NCI is one of the distinguished organizations selected to host an AFA CyberCamp this summer.

As an AFA CyberCamp host, NCI will receive software and a hands-on curriculum kit designed to teach students about cyber safety, cyber ethics, and critical network security skills and tools. Each AFA CyberCamp culminates in an exciting team-based competition that puts the campers in the role of IT administrators tasked with finding and addressing cybersecurity vulnerabilities in simulated network environments. The local AFA CyberCamp competitions will closely mimic AFA’s annual CyberPatriot National Youth Cyber Defense Competition, which will enter its fifteenth season in October. Read more

New College Institute to Present Smithsonian Poster Exhibition Highlighting the History of Women Inventors in the United States

 

Martinsville, Va –  American history, women with diverse backgrounds and interests created inventions that changed lives every day. But women haven’t always had equal opportunities to be inventors or received as much recognition. The Smithsonian and the United States Patent and Trademark Office present “Picturing Women Inventors,” a poster exhibition that explores the inventions of 19 highly accomplished American women. Astronauts, computer pioneers, and businesswomen join athletes, engineers, and even teenagers in this remarkable group of inventors. The posters will be on view at New College Institute April 1 – 30, 2022.

Coalition nears 40 members, adds eight to diverse membership since Nov. 2021 launch

Since the coalition first launched in mid-November 2021, Virginians for Offshore Wind, a coalition dedicated to advancing the offshore wind industry and the clean energy transformation and economic opportunities that come with it, has added eight new members to its diverse, growing roster, including Virginia State University, New College Institute, Shenandoah Valley Partnership, Lynnhaven River NOW, Beach Development Group, the Virginia Maritime Association, the Virginia State Building and Construction Trades Council, and Amplifier Ventures.

Longwood at NCI Graduates Ready to Enter Education Workforce

MARTINSVILLE, VA – Longwood University celebrated the completion of elementary education coursework for five local students. Caitlyn Cockram, Meghan Marlowe, Morgan Norman, Taylor Conklin, and Ryan Orton, who finished their studies at the New College Institute on Monday, Dec. 6, will be able to walk with their fellow 2022 graduates at Longwood’s Commencement Ceremony on May 21.
