NEW COLLEGE INSTITUTE ANNOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Martinsville, VA –In October of 2022, the Board of Directors of The New College Institute (NCI), a state governmental agency of higher learning located in Martinsville, Virginia, announced the beginning of an Executive Director search to identify the next leader of the Institute. After an extensive search process led by members of the NCI Board, New College is now pleased to announce that Joe E. Sumner, current Associate Vice-President for Economic Development of Wiregrass Georgia Technical College, in Valdosta Georgia, has been selected as the new NCI Executive Director, beginning February 28, 2023. New College Institute to Present Smithsonian Poster Exhibition Highlighting the History of Women Inventors in the United States

 

Martinsville, Va –  American history, women with diverse backgrounds and interests created inventions that changed lives every day. But women haven’t always had equal opportunities to be inventors or received as much recognition. The Smithsonian and the United States Patent and Trademark Office present “Picturing Women Inventors,” a poster exhibition that explores the inventions of 19 highly accomplished American women. Astronauts, computer pioneers, and businesswomen join athletes, engineers, and even teenagers in this remarkable group of inventors. The posters will be on view at New College Institute April 1 – 30, 2022.

FAA Launches Campaign to Encourage Air Traffic Controller Applications from Women, Minorities

Application window open July 30–Aug. 2


WASHINGTON – Ahead of an upcoming open application window to become an air traffic control specialist, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration has launched a week-long campaign to encourage more applications from women, minorities, and individuals from underrepresented communities. The campaign will feature current air traffic controllers and FAA leaders sharing their stories in media interviews, on social media, during Instagram Live conversations, and on other platforms. The FAA will also engage with diverse organizations to get the word out and has created a digital toolkit for groups to use.  Read more

New College Institute Builds Innovation Center for Wind Turbine Technicians

NCI offers the combination of GWO certified Basic Safety (BST) and Basic Technical Training (BTT)

New College Institute, located in Martinsville, Virginia, is focused on getting to the future faster, which is great for those looking for careers in growth areas.

Achieving GWO certification in both safety and technical training for wind turbine technicians, New College Institute’s work is a part of its creation of an innovation center, according to Brian Pace, who also is Coordinator of Advanced Manufacturing for the college.

The wind industry is expected to add as many as 900 jobs through the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project, with the first turbines installed in U.S. federal waters in June 2020. What’s more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics rates a wind turbine technician career as one of the hottest growth areas through 2029.

New Radford University Master’s Degree Coming to NCI

Starting Fall 2021, Radford University is bringing its Master of Science in Strategic Communication degree to New College Institute.

The graduate degree allows students to prepare for careers across various areas of expertise and industries, such as government, financial institutions, public relations firms, higher education, and health education. Students in the program will explore courses in public relations, organizational communication, political communication, interactive media and analytics, and more.

Applications Now Open for Second Virtual Session of AWS re/Start Training at NCI

Martinsville, VA – November 11, 2020 – New College Institute (NCI) is currently accepting applications for their December – February AWS re/Start Training session. In a collaborative effort with Amazon Web Services (AWS), NCI is offering a free opportunity for Virginians to learn cloud computing skills and prepare for entry-level cloud computing careers such as Client Support Specialist, Data Center Technician, IT Support Specialist, and Software Support Technician. Cloud computing skills are one of the most in demand IT skills by employers.
