WASHINGTON – Ahead of an upcoming open application window to become an air traffic control specialist, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration has launched a week-long campaign to encourage more applications from women, minorities, and individuals from underrepresented communities. The campaign will feature current air traffic controllers and FAA leaders sharing their stories in media interviews, on social media, during Instagram Live conversations, and on other platforms. The FAA will also engage with diverse organizations to get the word out and has created a digital toolkit for groups to use. Read more
NCI offers the combination of GWO certified Basic Safety (BST) and Basic Technical Training (BTT)

Achieving GWO certification in both safety and technical training for wind turbine technicians, New College Institute’s work is a part of its creation of an innovation center, according to Brian Pace, who also is Coordinator of Advanced Manufacturing for the college.
The wind industry is expected to add as many as 900 jobs through the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project, with the first turbines installed in U.S. federal waters in June 2020. What’s more, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics rates a wind turbine technician career as one of the hottest growth areas through 2029.

Starting Fall 2021, Radford University is bringing its Master of Science in Strategic Communication degree to New College Institute.
The graduate degree allows students to prepare for careers across various areas of expertise and industries, such as government, financial institutions, public relations firms, higher education, and health education. Students in the program will explore courses in public relations, organizational communication, political communication, interactive media and analytics, and more.

Martinsville – The National Society of Black Engineers awarded one of their annual Golden Torch Awards to Helen Howell and the Martinsville/Henry County National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) Jr. Chapter. NSBE’s Golden Torch Awards recognize excellence among technical professionals, corporate, government and academic leaders, and university and pre-college students.
Local students engaged in hands-on science experiments during a one-day camp, Science in Everyday Life. The camp took place at New College Institute’s Fayette Lab, a fully-equipped exploratory science laboratory designed to promote engagement in the sciences for learners of all ages.
It may be summer break for most children, but New College Institute (NCI) took the opportunity to invite their own school-age children to “work” at NCI for half a day. As part of NCI’s Bring a Kid to Work Day, employees of NCI were invited to bring their children, grandchildren, or other family members in grades K-12 to learn more about NCI’s operations and the educational opportunities available.

Though you often see Bassett Furniture products on HGTV and other national platforms, their headquarters remain here in Bassett, VA. Over the years, Bassett Furniture has hosted many interns through New College Institute — even hiring some of those interns for full-time roles.
The New College Institute (NCI), in partnership with James Madison University (JMU), offered a four-day cybersecurity boot camp for regional teachers. Cybersecurity refers to a set of techniques used to protect the integrity of networks and prevent programs and data from being compromised.
Middle school students wrapped up a week of learning at New College Institute’s Explore Engineering camp. The summer camp, one of several offered by NCI, was designed to help middle school students explore the opportunities, skills, and challenges associated with engineering through a variety of hands-on experiences.
