Class of 2019 Marks More than 425 Degrees Earned at NCI

After countless hours in the classroom, completing projects, earning internship hours, all while maintaining family and job expectations — students at New College Institute (NCI) earned their degrees and gained credentials needed to take the next step in their careers. NCI celebrated the accomplishments of recent graduates at a reception with more than 100 in attendance. Graduates earned their bachelor’s or master’s degrees and all of their classes took place locally, at NCI.

College & Career Day Inspires Students

During College and Career Day at New College Institute (NCI), fifth grade students from Patrick Henry Elementary School (PHES) met with ten local professionals to learn about their educational backgrounds and careers. These professionals represented a wide range of experience including the fields of engineering, education, law enforcement, military, and healthcare. Students rotated in small groups, where they were encouraged to ask questions about the professionals’ pathways to their chosen careers.

Thanks to New College Institute’s internship program, 575 college students have completed internships in our region since 2007. NCI is currently recruiting for 2019 summer interns in career sectors including healthcare, social work, business, marketing, digital media, video production, public school administration, manufacturing, and robotics.

Nisamar Sechrist Barrera is a student in the Longwood University at New College Institute elementary education degree program. Nisamar was able to save time and money by taking the Spanish Language CLEP exam at NCI in lieu of taking a 200 level Spanish course for an entire semester.

AWS Graduation Ceremony

Learners completed cloud training featuring scenario-based learning, hands-on labs, and coursework. Learners also focused on employment skills such as adaptive communication, time management, and collaboration. AWS re/Start alumni pursue entry-level cloud roles in operations, site reliability, and infrastructure support. In these positions, they can provide frontline support, escalate issues effectively, carry out initial troubleshooting, and automate manual tasks.

Now at the end of the free 12-week program, graduates are ready to receive their AWS Cloud Practitioner Certification.
